THE 2016 Goroka Cultural Show celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year 2016 and is set for September 16th to 18th. The annual Goroka Cultural Show in Papua New Guinea is one of "the largest tribal gatherings in the world" bringing together more than a 100 tribes to participate in the vibrant event; performing extraordinary displays of 'singsings' - traditional songs, dances and ritual performances.
The Goroka Cultural Show began in 1957 and was first introduced and organised by Australian patrol officers known as 'kiaps'. Kiaps from each district would build round houses typical of their districts, with cultural displays and 'singsing' groups.
From humble beginnings the Goroka Cultural Show has become an important community event fostering positive community relations within the many different tribes of the province and is a fantastic opportunity to gain an overview of Papua New Guinea's cultural diversity.
