THE curators of an art exhibition in Melbourne, Australia, are urgently looking for Papua New Guinean artists to submit work for the upcoming Sampari Art Show in December.
The submission date is 17 October 2016.
The show, curated and organised by a team of dedicated volunteers from the West Papua Women's Office, is themed 'West Papua' and will feature the art of artists across Melanesia in solidarity with the West Papuan people.
Sampari coordinators in each of the Melanesian nations are working to attract submissions inspired by West Papuans, their geography, cultures, politics, history and environment.
Submissions may be of collage, printing, photography, drawing, traditional sculpture, weaving and painting.
After the submission closing date on 17 October scans of each artist’s artwork will be emailed to Melbourne and each scan will be printed on exquisite paper, exhibited, and sold for $60.
Money from sales will be split 50-50 between the artist and the Federal Republic of West Papua Women’s Office.

Following the success of its inaugural art exhibition in 2015, the Federal Republic of West Papua (Women’s Office) is calling on Visual, Media, Scupture, Jewellery and Craft artists for the 2016 SAMPARI ART EXHIBITION AND SALE FOR WEST PAPUA (at the ACU Art Gallery in Melbourne, 2-11 December 2016).
West Papua, occupied by Indonesia since 1 May 1963, is a bounty of inspiration and paradox. It’s a territory of extraordinary physical beauty (being plundered). An ancient landmass of complex geologies (being exploited). A living museum of rare flora and fauna (sold in black markets across Java). The home of an indigenous people whose footprints embed ancient time and space. And the land of our neighbours whose ambition is to be free and independent.
The engagement of Australian and Melanesian artists in this unique land and its courageous people is crucial as the West Papuans approach the climax of their long freedom struggle.
Sampari 2015 attracted glass works, contemporary collage, printing, wire-work, photography, film, traditional weaving, mixed media, street sculpture, oil paintings. Half the works sold during the exhibition. In 2016 we are looking for an even more diverse selection; again, inspired by West Papuans, their culture(s), politics, history, or extraordinary maritime and territorial environments.
