THE people of Nissan Island in Bougainville will soon have their airstrip rehabilitated and opened.
This was made known to the Nissan islanders by the Minister for Civil Aviation, Davis Steven when he visited the island over the weekend. Steven was accompanied by the Minister for Bougainville Affairs, Joseph Lera and North Bougainville MP Lauta Atoi and a technical team from the National Airports Corporation.
Steven told the people that under the Bougainville rural airstrip project, Nissan island will be the first to have its airstrip opened once it is completed.
Steven said that the project will be funded by the National Government through his Ministry, collectively with support from all the Bougainville National MPs and the Autonomous Bougainville Government and its people.
He added that this showed the commitment and seriousness of the National Government to work with the ABG in restoring basic infrastructure services to enhance and improve the livelihood for the people.
